Reference Desk
Libraries have a lot to offer and it may be difficult to locate a particular resource amongst all we have. We’d love to assist you in your search, so please contact us through whatever communication channel you prefer listed below, or you can always stop in and ask us!
Contact Information
Northern Tier Library is closed for the night but you need to get in touch with someone pronto? No worries. Try this 24 hours a day, seven days a week service from the Allegheny County Library Association: Chat with a Librarian – Allegheny County Library Association (aclalibraries.org). You can email, fill out the form on the webpage linked to above, or you can send them a text message at 412-455-8474.
The Pennsylvania Power Library also offers this service to library cardholders which can be found here: Chat with a Librarian | 24/7 Help | POWER Library
Reference Services & Collections
While helping you get the resources or information you need is our most frequent activity, we also provide the following collections and services for your benefit.
INTERLIBRARY LOANS
Interlibrary Loan requests, often shortened to ILL, are requests that allow Northern Tier Regional Library to ask libraries that aren’t a part of the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA) for an item so that our patrons may borrow it. For example, a college may agree to let us borrow an academic text not normally found in public libraries. At the reference desk, we can help you learn how to make these special requests by using this website: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh ILL
TECH HELP
With computing technology changing incessantly, we’re here to help you navigate through these digital waters. Throughout the year, we host 30 minute one-on-one sessions by appointment to sit down with you and go over your tech questions. To register, look for a date and time to your liking here: Northern Tier Regional Library Calendar
LOCAL HISTORY
If you’re interested in the history of Pine, Richland, or the surrounding townships, we have a collection of books and photographs located in our reference area of the library. Beyond these selections, we can also point you in the direction of other valuable local history resources.
TEST PROCTORING
If you should find yourself needing to take an exam away from your school or organization, we may just be able to help you take your test at Northern Tier Regional Library with your institution’s permission. We have a PDF detailing our test proctoring guidelines here: NTRL Proctoring
