Summer is finally here! Northern Tier Library invites all children and teens from birth to 18
to participate in our 2017 Summer Reading Club: Build a Better World. Join us for programs and prizes all summer long. Sign up for the Summer Reading Club to receive a bag and folder
to collect stamps. You can collect up to 50 stamps throughout the summer and exchange them for awesome prizes at our Summer Reading Club Bash!
The rules are as follows:
- One stamp per book read. You can report on a maximum of six books per visit.
- One stamp per program attended.
- You can earn a maximum of 50 stamps.
We can’t wait for you to start collecting and completing all 50 stamps! In the meantime, we’ll have prizes and raffles to keep you occupied… Oh! And lots of books, movies, and games too!
Kids Summer Reading Club
Kids, get ready for plenty of prizes! We’re keeping last year’s increased limit of 50 books and you can still receive stamps for attending programs.
Programming is available every weekday at 10:30 AM and 1:00 PM!
Kick-Off Celebration: Saturday, June 17, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
You’ll have the opportunity to sign-up early for the Summer Reading Club while getting a preview of the activities and programs that will be available throughout the summer. Families welcome!
Family Fun Mondays
Mondays, June 19 – July 31, 10:30 – 11:30 AM
Families are encouraged to join us every Monday for some building-related fun!
June 19: Humane Animal Rescue
Humane Animal Rescue will introduce an animal guest and host a fun program for all members of the family. Other activities will be provided following their presentation. Registration is required.
June 26: PPG Science Presentation
Join PPG’s Science Education team for an hour of chemical wonders in an interactive presentation that showcases substances and their reactions. Registration is required.
July 3: Mini Golf at the Library
Come and enjoy some family time mini golfing at the library! We’ll build a course with books and enjoy other golf related activities and crafts. Registration is required.
July 10: Pittsburgh Parks: Skins & Skulls
Allegheny County Park Rangers will visit the library and display a selection of instructional items on local animals, with a focus on animal skulls and their skins. Registration is required.
July 17: Building Olympics
We’ll have a set of 10 different events for participants to compete in at our ‘building’ themed Decathlon. Registration is required.
July 24: Fort Building Challenge
Following a prompt, participants will use recycled materials to design and build a unique fort. Registration is required.
July 31: Building A Sailboat
Our friends from Home Depot will share a hands-on sailboat building activity with us at Northern Tier. Registration is required.
Baby Playtime
Tuesdays, June 20 – August 1, 10:30 – 11:00 AM
Enjoy a half hour of fun with your baby! We’ll share songs, finger plays, stories, and rhymes. Meet other parents and their babies, and enjoy some time together. This program is intended for infants ages 0 – 18 months. Registration is required.
Art Club Tuesdays
Tuesdays, June 20 – August 1, 1:00 – 2:00 PM
All artists needed! No experience necessary! Come and create something fun. This program is for ages 5 – 10. Registration is required to account for supply preparation.
Play and Story Time
Wednesdays, June 21 – August 2, 10:30 – 11:15 AM
Thursdays, June 22 – August 3, 10:30 – 11:15 AM
Come and enjoy a very active story time for all members of the family. We’ll read books, dance around, play games, and make crafts while enjoying quality time together. This program is for young children and their families. Registration is required (Wednesdays or Thursdays).
Building with Toys Cancelled
Wednesdays, June 21 – August 2, 1:00 – 3:00 PM
Enjoy playtime with LEGOs, puzzles, bricks, tiles, and all kinds of building toys with other kids in the community.
Family Fitness
Thursdays, June 22 – August 3, 1:00 – 1:30 PM
Enjoy a half hour filled with games, circuits, drills, dance, exercise, and yoga in the company of your family. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes! This program is for young children and their families. Registration is required.

Family Drop-In Programs
Each activity will be available for one week during regular library hours. All ages and all family members are encouraged to stop by & enjoy!
Building Haikus:June 19 – June 24
Write a haiku about making creating, building, and transforming.
Coloring Pages: June 26 – July 1
Enjoy the coloring craze at your local library! There will be markers and a variety of coloring pages available.
Foam Puzzles: July 3 – July 8
Use a variety of foam shapes to build an animal, dinosaur, robot, or any other creature you can imagine.
Book Review: July 10 – July 15
Tell us about a book you just finished and loved (or hated!) Who knows? You might persuade someone to give it a try.
Floating Ball: July 17 – July 22
Build a floating ball device and show us how long you can keep a ball floating in the air.
Finish This Drawing: July 24 – July 29
Pick a doodle prompt and use your creativity to finish a unique drawing.
Help The Earth: July 31 – August 4
Write a short sentence about something you can do to make our planet a better place.
Summer Reading Club Bash: Saturday, August 5, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Come and celebrate the end of our Summer Reading Club! Arrive promptly at 11:00 AM for a juggling show, followed by the opening of our Prize Market! Don’t forget your Summer Reading Club stamp card. Play games, make crafts, and enjoy a jump in the bouncy castle. The party lasts until 2:00 PM. Hooray for reading!
